The Pennsylvania School Safety Institute (PennSSI), in partnership with Millersville University, is pleased to present the inaugural opportunity to earn a Certificate in School Safety Preparedness.
PennSSI fosters safe and secure school communities through immersive scenarios and classroom trainings. The institute serves those who are tasked with keeping students and staff safe and works to equip individuals with the skills to address emerging security threats that may occur in school buildings, on district property or at other locations where students and staff may be present.
“We are excited about the opportunity to partner with Millersville University to expand our offerings to any individual who is passionate about keeping students and staff safe,” said Dr. Britta Barrickman, PennSSI’s chief impact officer. “While we have had significant interest in our facility and services since opening in 2023, there is a growing need for hands-on experiences and training related to school safety.”
Space is limited for the inaugural training program. By the conclusion of the classroom and hands-on portions of the program, participants will be able to:
- Define the basic concepts of disaster preparedness, including preparedness, response, mitigation and recovery.
- Know the proper actions to take in an active shooter event, both inside the school and outside the school, to keep students and staff safe.
- Understand the proper steps to take for various medical emergencies.
- Define the types of natural and man-made disasters that may occur and impact the community.
- Identify all of their community’s and entity’s stakeholders and properly communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Identify issues of mental health and the proper techniques for dealing with mental health issues in their school.
- Develop a plan for dealing with various potential emergency and non-emergency situations within their schools.
- Develop a reunification plan and demonstrate proper reunification techniques.
