This fall, PennSSI and Millersville University will present an exclusive opportunity to gain a Certificate in School Safety Preparedness. There are only 12 seats available for this inaugural certification, each at a cost of $900. Over the course of five sessions, participants will learn how to assess and address various natural and man-made disasters. 

By the conclusion of this course, learners will be able to:   

  • Define the basic concepts of disaster preparedness, including preparedness, response, mitigation and recovery. 
  • Know the proper actions to take in an active shooter event, both inside the school and outside the school, to keep students and staff safe. 
  • Understand the proper steps to take for various medical emergencies. 
  • Define the types of natural and man-made disasters that may occur and impact the community. 
  • Identify all of their community’s and entity’s stakeholders and properly communicate with internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Identify issues of mental health and the proper techniques for dealing with mental health issues in their school.  
  • Develop a plan for dealing with various potential emergency and non-emergency situations within their schools.  
  • Develop a reunification plan and demonstrate proper reunification techniques. 
  • Acknowledge and demonstrate proper personal mental health awareness.

 

Virtual courses will take place from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on October 15, 22, 29 and November 5, with a daylong, in-person portion at PennSSI’s facility on Friday, November 1.
