PennSSI and Millersville University are excited to provide another cohort for the exclusive opportunity to gain a Certificate in School Safety Preparedness. There are 24 seats available for this opportunity at a cost of $900. Over the course of five sessions, participants will learn how to assess and address various natural and man-made disasters. By the conclusion of this course, learners will be able to:   

• Define the basic concepts of disaster preparedness, including preparedness, response, mitigation and recovery. 

• Know the proper actions to take in an active shooter event, both inside the school and outside the school, to keep students and staff safe. 

• Understand the proper steps to take for various medical emergencies. 

• Define the types of natural and man-made disasters that may occur and impact the community. 

• Identify all of their community’s and entity’s stakeholders and properly communicate with internal and external stakeholders. 

• Identify issues of mental health and the proper techniques for dealing with mental health issues in their school.  

• Develop a plan for dealing with various potential emergency and non-emergency situations within their schools.  

• Develop a reunification plan and demonstrate proper reunification techniques. 

• Acknowledge and demonstrate proper personal mental health awareness. 

Interested individuals must submit the application below by January 17. Virtual courses will take place from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. on February 5, 12, 19 and 26, with a daylong, in-person portion at PennSSI’s facility in Mechanicsburg on either February 20 or 21 from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. In the application, please indicate your preferred on-site immersive training day. PennSSI staff will do their best to accommodate attendee preferences but there is no guarantee.
